Hatha Yoga

Hatha-yoga is the most popular form of yoga practiced in the West and maybe the world. It is focused on physical exercises that target the entire body while integrated breathing techniques to help increase one’s capacity for energy. There are many styles of hatha-yoga. Regardless of the name of the practice it falls under the umbrella of hatha-yoga. Classical teachers often do not create a style - you can see this with monks or even the father of modern yoga Krishnamacharya. Many teach using the knowledge and concept of vinyasa-krama. This is simply specific postures placed in a specific sequence - hence, a modern yoga style can be created by a teacher. Studying the concept of vinyasa-krama is beneficial because a one size fits all approach isn’t always appropriate - especially when practitioners have different challenges or health conditions. Therefore, we teach individually or in small groups to cater to the student’s individual need.  However, a foundational sequence is very beneficial or essential, so the core of the practice is based on the Sivananda Yoga Center’s basic 12 postures with classical Surya Namaskar.

Yoga Therapy

We have two systems of yoga therapy. One is beneficial to everyone regardless of their health. This is where we utilize yoga bodywork techniques to expedite flexibility and strength in targeted areas throughout the body. This results in improved alignment and strength. For example, one side of the body may be tighter or weaker than the other. In this case, we apply asymmetrical exercises and bodywork techniques to increase the harmony and balance throughout the body. For specific injuries, we have IAYT certification that uses medically proven postures to treat specific conditions which include back pain, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, muscle spasm, spondylosis, scoliosis, rotator cuff tear, knee pain, hip pain, arthritis & osteoporosis. Regarding Osteoporosis, yoga has been demonstrated to reverse osteoporosis, however, if practiced incorrectly - injury such spinal fractures may occur. So, it is very important to have a qualified instructor to learn to practice correctly without injury so one may progress in their health and well-being.

Meditation

Classically all yoga practices lead to meditation as the Sage Patanjali teaches that the goal of yoga is to cease the fluctuations of the mind. There are various techniques yoga teaches to help the practitioner achieve this state. Though we can start practicing meditation at any point in our journey, hatha-yoga is an essential preparation to help us achieve the maximum benefits of meditation. Yoga meditation is also known as raja-yoga. Raja-yoga is considered the royal path and is even considered essential to achieve the maximum physical benefits of hatha-yoga. In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, verse II.76 - it states that “Without hatha-yoga, raja-yoga cannot be achieved, and without raja-yoga, hatha-yoga is of little use.” This is the classical path to the mind-body connection.
